Hackers have been making recent headlines for stealing credit reports from AnnualCreditReport.com and exposing the information on a self-hosted website. AnnualCreditReport.com is a site that allows consumers to view their credit reports. Apparently, hackers were able to breach the site’s internet defenses and gained access to the credit reports of some 200 million Americans. As the hackers came across the trove of information, they could not resist but post it. Analysts say it’s a gesture common to thieves who wants to at least let the public know how good they are at what they do.
Twelve celebrities’ records were revealed to the public on www.exposed.su. Detailed financial information of Hollywood stars like Kim Kardishian, Beyoncé and Jay-Z, Paris Hilton, Mel Gibson, Ashton Kutcher was posted online. Michelle Obama’s records were not spared, too, along with other politicians and their aides. Among them were Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden and LAPD Chief Charlie Beck. Police say that the hackers may have been looking for huge plunder but came across a cache of data. There are unconfirmed reports that bank accounts were actually robbed. Hulk Hogan who was one of the cybercrime’s victims is said to be taking steps to protect him from online theft. Bill Gates’ spokesman says that the popular computer programmer—and rumored to be a hacker in his early years –has no comment to the matter; while Beyoncé’s party was silent about the issue.
On an update to this news, the hackers have shut down the website used to post the famous peoples’ records. But before inactivating the site, the cyber criminals said, “We have enjoyed every minute of the past 12 days of providing entertainment and laughs to all of you. Sadly it’s time to say bon voyage — we hope — inspiration, fear, denial, happiness, approval, disapproval, mockery, embarrassment, thoughtfulness, jealousy, hate, even love.” In what seems to be an implication that they will return with an even a bigger hacking agenda, they added, “If you believe that God makes miracles, you have to wonder if Satan has a few up his sleeve.”
The LAPD and the FBI is in pursuit of the web breachers. They suspect that the cyber thieves are based in Russia, where hacking is rampant. Internet hacking is growing problem in the web-crazed community. Every day there are people who report having their bank accounts drained off and were used for online purchase somewhere around the world.
